the UN - where sexual innuendo gets you dismissed but genocide gets you promoted...

ah yes, that wonderfully backwards organization charged with bringing peace and human rights to the world is in the news again. it seems kofi annan (i still can't figure out why people are gun-ho about this guy) is going to dismiss carina perelli, the head of the elections agency, thanks to her misconduct while in office. seems she thought she was in city hall in chicago and had an inner circle of folks, who may or may not have been capable, that ran around using sexual innuendo and making unwanted advances. the appalling part is that ms. perelli just let all this happen, she created the climate of harassment. and since the UN has recently had some trouble with folks in high positions doing bad things (that whole selling out the iraqi people thing...involving none other than kofi's son) kofi isn't going to take it anymore. (although i wonder how quick he would be with a dismissal if he hadn't been embarrassed by the oil for food fiasco).

the thing that amuses me about all this is that kofi annan is looking to dismiss a woman for creating an environment of sexual harassment in her office. if my memory serves me correctly kofi annan managed the response to rwanda...in the process looking the other way and handcuffing the troops in the area so as to allow the needless and preventable slaughter of an entire country. did kofi get dismissed for incompetence and embarrassing the UN? no...he got promoted and became it's leader. so apparently ms. perelli just went about it the wrong way...see, if she had instead allowed the elections in iraq to become a complete joke, and maybe allowed her office to sit back and watch as a million people were slaughtered she might be getting promoted to be annan's right hand woman. instead, she made the mistake of grabassing in the office, and now she is going to be out of work. does this make anyone else scrunch up their face and say "waah"?

maybe it is time the UN got out of new york...got out of this country...it seems it is beginning to take after our system a little too much. soon the mafia will get control of it...although even the gotti boys couldn't do much worse.
